The Best Part of Fall
Apple Orchard Doughnuts
The fall air hits as you step out of the car and the uneasy feeling of mud getting into your shoes. Most would head toward the apple picking or corn maze, maybe one of the various games/activities setup for the season outside, mostly for kids. I however make a b line for the inside where light billowy goodness resides. Those fall apple orchard doughnuts are next to heavenliness when consumed fresh, still hot from the fryer. My local place seems to have many variations, instead of the regular and cinnamon sugar covered variations offered by many places. I make sure to order both as well as an iced doughnut at my local orchard and every time seem to be blown away by the freshness and taste of the little donuts. The cake batter they use to create the cake donuts seems to be the perfect thing to cut through the crisp fall air and when put together with a nice fresh cup of apple cider is the best thing one can get during this time of year.
I only do this once a year and get just enough to satisfy my cravings. Coming in with an openness to the idea that maybe the magic goes away, with this time it not tasting as good as you remember. That’s when you get hooked all over again by these addicting objects of fried perfection. I wouldn’t want these year-round nor would the weather allow it to be such a euphoric experience, I mean could you imagine these bad boys in the summer when its 90 plus degrees out. This experience is once a year when the weather is right and the air is on the cusp of turning you inside out by the freezing weather moving in. Next fall, please, if you haven’t before, go experience these sweet little treats the right way at your local Apple orchard.
