How do old school Italians make tomato sauce?

Traditional Italian tomato sauce is made by sautéing garlic and onion in olive oil, then adding canned tomatoes and cooking until the sauce has thickened. Fresh basil, salt, and sometimes sugar are added to taste. Some variations may also include ingredients such as white wine, crushed red pepper flakes, or grated Parmesan cheese.
