McRib Review
The disgust I felt while waiting for more order in my car after ordering a Mcrib is unmatched. I mean it, I fell for this marketing campaign a year before and I had this weight in my stomach that when the friendly employee came and delivered the food to my car, I could not even look them in the eyes. The disgust I felt was probably only in my head as the employee was only kind when giving me my bag of food with the McRib and French fries as I’m sure they had been doing all day.
Let’s start off with the fact that this is not ribs, right? This mystery meat patty does not have bones and from the very little research I’ve done it doesn’t seem to be one piece of the animal. As I carried on with this unsettling fact, it occurred to me I should not judge it with the same fervor that I would a smokehouse but with the taste of a McDonald’s sandwich. This is not going to be gourmet and therefore would not be scored/judged as such.
The sandwich consists of a pork patty, bbq sauce, pickles, and onions all placed nicely on a hoagie bun. The BBQ sauce is slathered all over the patty and making sure to somehow end up everywhere from your hands to clothes without you remembering that you had even taken your hands off the sandwich. The pickles were acidic which was nice, while the onions were tasteless adding nothing. The bun and patty were equally bad, the bun bad in almost every aspect and the patty flavorlessness which may be better than the alternative. The only good about this sandwich was the BBQ sauce that had a slight smokiness hint to it giving it some depth which surprised me as the standard BBQ sauce with nuggets at McDonald’s is not bad at all. This sauce with the slight smokiness adds a little different flavor which was a welcome change to the taste buds.
Overall I would not recommend getting this sandwich which may be possible as they claimed this is the last we will see of this sandwich on its farewell tour. Marketing I assume, but if they do bring it back, let’s hope they make some much needed changes to the recipe as the thought behind this sandwich gives it a shot at being great with the pork and BBQ sauce cut by pickles and onions. I however doubt McDonald’s will be able to bring the McRib to the levels that smokehouses all over this nation do.
